KATHY Lin says she believes her husband Robert Xie is innocent and foreshadowed an appeal after he was sentenced to life imprisonment for each of the five members of the Lin family he murdered.
A teary Ms Lin sat in court clutching the hand of a Salvation Army officer as her 53-year-old husband was sentenced in the NSW Supreme Court.
She has attended each day of the trial despite the fact he was accused of killing her brother Min “Norman” Lin, 45, his wife Yun Li “Lily” Lin, 43, her sister Yun Bin “Irene”, 39, and the Lins’ two young boys Henry, 12, and Terry, 9 as they slept in their beds.
After Justice Elizabeth Fullerton handed down the sentence, Ms Lin told waiting media outside that her husband was innocent.
“Robert’s innocent he did not kill my brother’s family. He is a loving and caring family man,” Ms Lin said.
“He is a good husband, father, son, uncle and friend.
“Robert has a good relationship with my family. He was wrongly charged with a crime he did not commit — he is a scapegoat in this injustice.”
In an interview before Xie was found guilty, Ms Lin explained how her husband had looked after his nephew in the week leading up to the murders.
The Crown argued that Xie, who continues to maintain his innocence, had sedated his wife on July 18, 2009, the night of the murders.
But Justice Fullerton said she could not find beyond reasonable doubt Xie had sedated Ms Lin but said it was a possibility she had simply not woken when he left their bed.
“This has destroyed my family — we were just a simple, happy family,” Ms Lin said yesterday.
“I know who my husband is and I know he had a good relationship with my parents, my brother and my brother’s children — he loved them so much.
“In the early stages of the investigation, the police believed there was more than one person involved.
“No one could have done this by themselves. Not one person did this.”
