A woman jumped into the Parramatta River to try to escape police following a car chase in Sydney’s inner west last night.
Police said officers were pursuing a car at about 8.30pm when it hit a pole on Hilly St at Mortlake.
The Daily Telegraph understands the woman then jumped into the Parramatta River, allegedly in an attempt to flee, with officers following her into the water to make an arrest.
A male and a female from the car were arrested by police at the scene.
There were no serious injuries as a result of the crash and police are still investigating the incident.
Across town just over an hour later, police divers were called to Jamisontown, in Sydney’s west, after a car crashed into the Nepean River.
Locals said there was a large police presence in the area, with Fire and Rescue NSW also in attendance.
“One cop car was looking for people moving along the river bank on the west side of the river,” witness Bernard Hammer said.
NSW Police will conduct a search for the vehicle this morning after emergency services failed to locate it Friday night.
Officers believe it may be a self-harm incident, however they have not confirmed any deaths or located the vehicle.
