It is filled with luxury features and boasts panoramic views of the country’s most iconic beach — but this apartment is a “prison cell’’ for a wealthy pub baron who is appealing against a court decision to make him serve home detention there for bashing his ex-girlfriend.

Phillip de Angelis says he cannot stomach spending the next year in his beachfront unit for a “disgraceful” campaign of domestic violence against his socialite ex-girlfriend.

De Angelis, 38, was yesterday sentenced to 12 months of home detention at the oceanfront apartment, where he will be required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and abstain from drugs.

He earlier pleaded guilty to five domestic violence charges involving his high-profile former partner, interior decorator Nellie Tilley.

Magistrate Philip Stewart also sentenced de Angelis to 300 hours of community service and a two-year community corrections order.

But his legal team, who had argued that an intensive corrections order without the home detention component was more suitable, has lodged an appeal against the severity of the sentence.

The unit — which sold for $4.1 million in 2016 — has panoramic views of Bondi Beach, three kingsize bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large alfresco terrace.

Mr Stewart has granted de Angelis bail ahead of the appeal hearing in March.

That means he will not have to start his home detention sentence and will only have to abide by the bail conditions of not taking drugs or alcohol, despite the magistrate expressing concerns about him being allowed out in the community without supervision.

The court heard that in 2016, de Angelis punched Ms Tilley in the mouth, threw a lighter at her causing a gash on her forehead and beat a bathroom door to try to get to her after she found a video on his phone of him having sex with another woman.

She has previously provided a detailed statement at a hearing.

“How do I measure the impact of my sons watching their mother change from a confident positive happy woman to an anxious, edgy, sad and highly strung mum?,” Ms Tilley said.

“How do I measure the impact of being socially ostracised for coming forward?

“Seeing his enraged face is something I will never forget. I can’t ever express how terrifying that is.”

After the attack, de Angelis exclaimed: “Oh my god bubby what have I done?” He then began to cry.

Ms Tilley is the former wife of wealthy hotelier Simon Tilley, the brother of James Packer’s close confidant Ben Tilley.

Last night she said if she could help one other woman escape domestic violence through her circumstances it would have been worth the heartache.

“I hope this situation will help other women in similar circumstances … It has been a long journey from my original pleas for help to the family which were met with silence to the justice system now protecting me for which I am very grateful,” she said.

Last night, Ms Tilley did not want to comment any further on the sentencing or de Angelis.
