Ambitious plans for an indoor sports centre have been lodged for Redeemer Baptist School at North Parramatta.

The school, which has 565 students from kindergarten to year 12, has filed plans with Parramatta Council for the indoor facility, a terraced amphitheatre and maintenance shed at the rear of its property at Masons Drive, Pennant Hills Rd and James Ruse Drive.

Subject to approval from the Sydney Central City Planning Panel, the centre would be built over the existing concrete tennis courts and maintenance shed, which will be demolished to make way for the multimillion-dollar development.

Headmaster Russell Bailey hoped the centre - for sports including tennis, basketball and soccer - would be complete by the middle of next year to the benefit of all students.

“Obviously we concentrate on academia but sport is just as important, and for the good academic students, it’s so important to get out and play some individual sports and team sports to extend themselves that way,’’ he said.

The indoor sports centre could be completed mid 2025 if it gets the green light.

“Most years we get state medals in athletics and sometimes in swimming as well. Sometimes our students get to representative levels in football and zone.’’

The 2062 sq m centre is slated for a site that includes two ovals and was divided into the Hills and Parramatta council areas before the local government mergers in 2016.

The centre will be perched at the back of the property.

However, despite the amalgamation, different local planning controls continue to apply to both portions of the site.

A request to allow the tennis court cover to reach 12.26m instead of the maximum 9m allowed under Parramatta rules has been made.

A statement of environmental effects stated the property had a landslip problem in 2021 and the amphitheatre would be built to rectify it.

An internal access road is also proposed around the indoor sports building and maintenance shed.

The contemporary building will be a contrast to the heritage properties that grace the site, including the Burnside Homes conservation area, Reid House and Sargood Hall.

However, the sports centre won’t impact the historical properties.
