Rebel Wilson and neighbours at war over home renovations

Rebel Wilson and her neighbours are at war over noise, dust and intrusive windows in their exclusive Harbourside suburb. The actor has put forward complaints to council, claiming her neighbour’s renovations will block her “iconic high value views”.

Case about fighting a bully, not money: Rebel Wilson

It’s jackhammers at 10 paces as Rebel Wilson and her neighbours are at war over noise, dust and intrusive windows in an exclusive Harbourside suburb.

Millionaires backing on to the harbour in Sydney’s inner west are furious that four major renovations — including Hollywood star Wilson’s $900,000 redevelopment — are ruining their luxurious lifestyles.

Everyone, including Wilson, has complained about excessive noise and dust, while Wilson has also been concerned about obstruction of her water views.

In November the Pitch Perfect star posted a shot on Instagram of the early stages of the renovation and the view she will enjoy from her waterfront property.

Works were initially delayed after her planning consultants last year failed to get a neighbour’s permission for access to their property.

“We have endured 18 months of this with no end in sight,” one resident said.

“We would never have moved here if we knew it was going to be such a construction site. It’s crazy.”

The Hollywood actor’s builders have been using mini-jackhammers to minimise the impact.

The home remains gutted while works are going on. Builders nearby said they had seen the star make trips back to the property every few months.

Despite the renovation havoc, residents said the actor, who originally hails from Sydney’s Hills district, is “lovely”.

She said the alterations would block her “iconic high value views” of the CBD, North Sydney and Parramatta River.

“I would submit that for privacy reasons, the window for the additions that is on the western side wall be frosted or otherwise altered so that there is not a direct view into my property from this proposed new window,” she wrote in a complaint to the former Leichhardt Council.

“Aside from the obvious noise concerns from such a massive change involving a large amount of jackhammering and rock hammering over a long period of time, and I am concerned that this will cause structural damage to my land and property.

“My sister works as a nurse at Sydney Hospital and due to shift work often has to sleep during the day.”

Some homes on the road have uninterrupted views of Sydney Harbour and go for as much as $8.5 million.

Wilson’s alterations to her $3.7m, three-bedroom home are relatively humble in comparison.

Plans approved by Inner West Council show the installation of a small pool, new balcony and master bedroom upstairs.

There are no plans to alter her personal jetty at the foot of the 200sq m property.

Rebel’s management did not respond to requests for comment.

Last month the High Court declined special leave to appeal the Victorian Appeal’s Court decision requiring Ms Wilson to pay back about 90 per cent of her $4.7m defamation payout from Bauer Media.

She successfully sued the publisher of Woman’s Day after a series of articles falsely branded her a serial liar.
