It’s the race that stops Sydney Harbour, with four iconic ferries set to make waves in the annual ‘Ferrython’ on Australia Day.
Each year, the race draws thousands of spectators to the surrounds of the harbour to cheer on four of the city’s iconic Emerald Class ferries as they compete in the water.
The ferries will race from the starting line of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, completing two laps around Fort Denison, all vying to cross the line at the Sydney Opera House first.
The four vessels that are taking part are named after Australian Icons such as May Gibbs, Catherine Hamlin, Bungaree and Fred Hollows.
In charge of a boat in the race for the first time is 44-year-old, Julie Maley, who will hope to lead “May Gibbs” to victory.
Skippering a boat on the Harbour is something the Transdev Ferry Master is very used to, but having the opportunity to race one is an experience that she is really looking forward to.
“I am excited, it is a great experience and a fun atmosphere being on-board the ferries” she told the Saturday Telegraph.
Each team will be racing to support a group in need, with The May Gibbs ferry supporting the State Emergency Services.
“We are just out there to have fun and support the SES.”
“It will be a little bit weird and tight with four boats racing”
Having been on-board before in previous races, she said she wanted to give it up before being the skipper, stating, “I felt like it was my time.”
Although it’s her first time, she said she knows what she has to do to win.
“I think the tip is to be in the inside boat around Fort Denison.”
