A convicted killer transferred to Goulburn Supermax jail after he held a prison guard hostage for six hours inside a north coast correctional centre allegedly attacked a high-profile inmate just months after arriving in his new home.

The man, who can only be known as DM for legal reasons, was being housed in a section of the jail reserved for high-risk inmates when he allegedly stabbed fellow prisoner Talal Alameddine in January last year.

Alameddine, who is serving a 14-year prison sentence for supplying the gun that killed police accountant Curtis Cheng, is the brother of alleged underworld boss Rafat Alameddine.

Alameddine is not accused of any involvement in Mr Cheng’s death.

Prison sources confirmed at the time that Alameddine was cut on the face and shoulder during the melee but that his injuries were not life threatening. He was taken to hospital for treatment but returned to the jail a short time later.

His alleged attacker, DM, was also taken to hospital for assessment, the source said.

DM, now aged 22, was sentenced to 27 years in jail in May 2020 for the bloody ISIS-inspired killing of a service station worker at Queanbeyan when he was a teenager.

Earlier this year he was sentenced to a further eight years behind bars after he and another inmate admitted holding a prison guard hostage and torturing him during a siege at Kempsey jail in December 2020.

As a result of the Kempsey incident, DM was transferred to Supermax to serve out the remainder of his sentence in the jail’s high-risk management unit.

Alameddine’s stabbing is alleged to have taken place sometime between 10.55am and 11.05am on January 23, 2022.

Court documents did not reveal how the two men came to be in physical contact with each other or where within the unit the incident occurred.

DM was taken to Goulburn Police Station and charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless wounding and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He fronted Goulburn Local Court this week where he was formally committed to stand trial on the two wounding charges, the most serious of which carries a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars.

The charge of being armed with intent was formally withdrawn by prosecutors.

DM will now face the NSW District Court later this month for a date to be set for his arraignment.
