Police will have extended access to income protection and workers’ compensation arrangements under a deal struck to allay fears the entitlements would be wound back.

The government has agreed to a golden handshake redundancy scheme for officers with more than 10 years’ experience.

The government will announce it has struck a new memorandum of understanding, which extends income protection arrangements for police as old as 65 and solidifies access to workers’ compensation.

NSW Treasury expects the payments will cut back on workers’ compensation claims, but the government wanted to make it clear those pathways for support remained available.

Police Minister David Elliott said every officer injured in the line of duty retained access.

“It is only fair that these officers receive the support and benefits they deserve,” he said.

Police Association president Tony King said: “We thank the government for extending income protection to older police officers as well as maintaining access to important benefits and entitlements.”
