P-plater in dramatic drug arrest after refusing to pull over in Surry Hills

POLICE drew their weapons on a P-plater driver in Sydney last night after the man refused to pull over and allegedly scrambled to discard bags containing a powder out of his window.

About 12.30am this morning the man was stopped at a red light in a white Toyota at the junction of Elizabeth St and Wentworth Ave, Surry Hills, when an unmarked police vehicle attempted to pull the car over.

However, once the light turned green, the driver ignored the police lights behind him and continued to drive south along Elizabeth St.

A witness — who happened to be driving next to the man at the time — claimed that he looked over and noticed the man appearing to scramble between his legs.

The man — who did not wish to be named due to safety concerns — alleged that he then saw the man try to toss the several bags of powder out of his car as he drove.

“He threw (it) out the window, he threw a couple of bags out,” the man said.

“They (police) had their lights on halfway up the street and he just kept rolling, rolling. He wasn’t pulling up. He’s looking between his legs, looking down, and then stashed it out the window.”

Seeing this, the witness quickly alerted the trailing police, pulling his black Mustang GT over into a nearby alleyway and rushing to help the officers.

“When I saw him get rid of them, I yelled at the cops that he threw them out the window,” he said. “He didn’t pull over, so they pulled their guns out — they opened his door and grabbed him out.”

The man was detained and searched in a Surry Hills Local Area Command caged truck at the scene, before being escorted to the police station for processing and is expected to be charged later today.

His white Toyota Aurion and the surrounding area were also searched, with a thick wad of cash being found inside the vehicle.
