An elderly man accused of attempting to murder his son-in-law in Sydney’s leafy upper north shore was allegedly carrying two firearms and had access to another rifle, police will allege.
William Terrence Murrell, 73, was allegedly found in possession of a Ruger .22 semiautomatic rifle and a revolver when police arrived at the Wahroonga home on Thursday morning shortly after he allegedly shot his 50-year-old son-in-law Mirko Uskovic.
Police later searched Murrell’s Beecroft home, where they allegedly found a .22 calibre Winchester lever-arch shotgun. Murrell was also allegedly in possession of 33.3g of a vegetable matter that police believe was cannabis when he was arrested.
The details were contained in court documents used in a brief bedside hearing in Royal North Shore Hospital on Friday after Murrell was charged with eight offences over the alleged shooting, including shoot with intent to murder.
The other charges include possessing unregistered firearms.
Murrell is set to fight the attempted murder charge and has pleaded not guilty.
No plea has been entered to the other charges.
Police have also applied for an AVO against Murrell on behalf of Uskovic that will be heard in court next week.
Detectives are now working to uncover the motive for the alleged shooting, with a possible separation of Mr Uskovic from Murrell’s daughter being a potential line of inquiry.
Police were called to the Highlands Ave home at 10.10am on Thursday after receiving multiple reports from concerned neighbours about shots being fired.
Responding officers found both men in the front yard of the property.
Mr Uskovic had a gunshot wound to his neck.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.
Murrell also had facial injuries and is under police guard in hospital before he is expected to be released into police custody.
