The murder weapon used in the brutal killing of Merrylands woman Erin Gilbert has not been found, four days on since her mystery death.

A meticulous search was carried out in the streets and parks surrounding her Newman St unit on Thursday, in the hope of locating the instrument — or even clues to who killed the 42-year-old married woman.

Mrs Gilbert was found in a pool of blood on the lounge room floor on Sunday night when her husband Nicholas Gilbert arrived home.

She died at the scene from massive head injuries, despite Mr Gilbert’s frantic efforts to revive her.

A dozen NSW Police officers searched through bins, gutters and drains as they conducted a ground search looking for clues, while crime scene officers continued sifting through the woman’s home.

It’s understood police were looking for a large, sharp weapon used to stab Mrs Gilbert in the head multiple times.

The Daily Telegraph has been told the couple was in significant financial trouble after borrowing money to fund multiple IVF procedures they had undertaken in the hope of having a baby together.

FINANCIAL WOES

They had recently been served an eviction notice from their unit for unpaid rent.

A police source said the couple’s financial dealings was one line of inquiry.

Mr Gilbert arrived back at the unit around 11.30pm to the horrific discovery.

“I walked through the bedroom, Erin was on her back and it looked like she was choking on blood,’ he said.

“I jumped in, grabbed her arm and tried to resuscitate her.’

He grabbed his phone and called a mate for help.

“I just said ‘Erin’s dead, help me, Erin’s dead’.

Neighbours who heard screaming inside the first floor unit called Triple-0.

Mr Gilbert says his wife didn’t have any enemies and he had no idea who would harm her.
