Household security footage has captured several people pouring petrol over two cars before running from a southwest Sydney driveway as the vehicles are enveloped in flames.
“Scared’ children were seen running out of the house after the cars, sitting in the driveway, were set on fire with neighbours hearing loud bangs as they saw the vehicles in flames.
Officers were called to San Cristobal Drive in Green Valley shortly before 1am following reports of a fire in a home’s driveway.
Firefighters arrived to find two vehicles ablaze, which they promptly extinguished.
The fire caused minor damage to the home, but no injuries have been reported..
A neighbour, who wishes not to be named, said he reviewed the security footage which showed people pouring petrol on the car before running away.
He said the footage had been handed over to police.
As the cars were set in flames, neighbours rushed out of their homes to get a glimpse of what was happening on their street.
Alex Hani said “we were very scared” after seeing the blaze across the street which was “horrible”.
When asked if he saw kids running out of the house, Mr Hani said “of course”, explaining they were also “scared”.
“I hope police … (they) have to do something about it,” he said.
“There wasn’t any car or something, I think people were walking … it’s very rare in this area.”
One nearby neighbour, Irene Razak, told reporters she stood outside her home, watching firefighters battle the blaze which was as high as the house.
She said the flames were flying away from the house and towards the street.
Ms Razak was thankful nobody was injured, saying the people within the house came outside as well as their direct neighbours.
While admitting she doesn’t know much about the people living inside, she said they “mind their own business” and don’t cause problems.
“Nothing like this (happens here)”, Ms Razak said.
A man living inside the house declined to comment when approached by The Daily Telegraph.
Earlier, a tradesman was seen inspected the damaged cars about 8.20am on Tuesday morning.
Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the cause of the fire, which is being treated as suspicious.
Officers are investigating whether the car fires may be linked to recent gang-related incidents in Sydney’s southwest.
Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Liverpool police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
