Seven cars have been badly damaged and police are looking for a driver following a multi-vehicle smash in southwest Sydney on Monday afternoon.
About 3.30pm, police allege a male driver behind the wheel of a four-wheel drive was on Helen Street, Sefton when it collided with two cars at a roundabout before crashing into several more vehicles.
Police sources report at least seven vehicles were damaged including the four-wheel-drive, which mounted the front of a Mercedes Benz hatchback parked on the side of Helen Street.
No one was injured but police have yet to find the driver of the SUV, who allegedly left the scene on foot with a passenger.
Nearby shop owners reported hearing “a large bang” outside before racing out into “chaos”, with damaged vehicles blocking both lanes of Helen Street.
Chloe Sun from Sefton Massage Centre said the bang was “so loud”, she thought a car had crashed into the front of her shop.
“It was very noisy, we had no idea what happened, I thought the car was coming into the shop window and it was very scary,” Ms Sun said.
“I went outside to see a big accident, lots of people walking around … very lucky no one was hurt.”
Kebab shop owner Erdal Cakir said he also heard a “tyres screeching” out on the road in front of his shop.
“I heard this huge noise, tyres screeching then a smash, I was sure someone was dead but no it was just a big pileup,” Mr Cakir said.
“There were about five or six cars in bad shape, including the four-wheel-drive on top of the Mercedes … it’s amazing no one’s hurt, normally there’s heaps of school kids around at this time of day.”
Multiple vehicles have been written off including the SUV, the Mercedes, a blue Mazda sedan and a red Toyota Yaris with a tow truck called in to pull several vehicles away.
Local police were still searching the area on Monday night.
