A man who died after being shot by police inside a northern Sydney granny flat last night had suddenly pointed a single barrel shotgun at the officers, who had started to retreat when they saw he was holding the weapon.
It can be revealed that the three officers were responding to reports that Jacob Carr, 53, had strangled his mother when they arrived at the Ingleside property at 9.45pm on Saturday.
A party with about 50 people was being held at the Mona Vale Rd property on a tennis court and Mr Carr is understood to be a relative of one of the people celebrating.
He was inside the granny flat at the back of a main house when police arrived and entered the hallway, a police source said.
The officers requested Carr show his hands and get into view but when he walked to the middle of the hallway they saw he was holding a single barrel shotgun at his side.
The police moved away when they saw he was armed and one officer took out his firearm.
He was forced to shoot when Mr Carr then raised his shotgun and pointed it right at the police officers.

The bullet hit Carr in the leg and police said he died due to significant blood loss while en route to hospital.
It is understood Carr’s shotgun contained six rounds of ammunition and one of round in the chamber at the time of the incident and there were other loaded firearms within reach of Carr in the granny flat.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Julie Boon from Northwest metropolitan region today said: “Three officers responding to a domestic violence incident at a granny flat on the property attempted to speak to a 53-year-old man.”
“He was armed with a firearm and police fired one round into the man’s leg. He was treated for first aid and conveyed to hospital by ambulance, where he was later declared deceased.
“It’s my understanding the officers are wearing body-worn cameras and realised the man was armed.”
Police would not say if Carr was known to them or whether he suffered from mental health issues.
“A critical incident investigation has been formed and police will be preparing a report for the coroner,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Ms Boon said.
“Were very concerned for the welfare of all three officers involved. Appropriate action will be taken to support them in coming weeks and months.”
