Police called in as 200 would-be renters crowd Hinchinbrook home

Unbelievable vision shows the moment “total mayhem” erupted on a suburban street in southwest Sydney, with police called in to control the crowd.

Chaos as hundreds turn up to Sydney rental inspection

Chaos erupted in a suburban street in Sydney’s southwest today as police were called to manage over 200 prospective renters who turned up to inspect a property.

A video taken by a resident in Bennison Rd in Hinchinbrook shows hundreds of people lining up outside house number 31 to inspect it.

“This is unbelievable. One house goes up for rent in southwest Sydney and its total mayhem. 200 plus maybe more people turned up. Total gridlock of the whole street,” the resident said in the video as he filmed the madness.

Streets were flooded with cars and traffic quickly piled up on the usually quiet suburban street, blocking access to other roads around the neighbourhood and creating mayhem for residents.

Blaze Real Estate listed the four-bedroom house on 23 December for $530 a week – a price property manager Isabella Mucedola said was quite ordinary for the area.

“We weren’t expecting that amount of people. It was quite overwhelming but obviously as agents we keep our professionalism,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

“When the police arrived, they informed us we were following (Covid safe) protocol.

“It was more the traffic and the foolishness of the people not following the road rules and congesting the street.”

Ms Mucedola said the landlord was equally as surprised to find so many people had expressed interest in their home.

She said the agency were no longer taking new inquiries for the house, but all existing inquiries would have the opportunity for a private inspection to be arranged to view the property.

“Our office was closed on the Christmas break, so that was the reason for the delay. We’d like to wrap it up as soon as possible,” she said.

Having worked in real estate for eight years, Ms Mucedola has experienced a high volume of foot traffic in the past for a number of properties but expressed this situation was likely a result of high demand and little supply in the market.

“With Covid, it does put a lot of stress and strain on property,” she said.

“There’s a high demand at the moment. I guess it was one of those properties that is just popular.”
