PLASTIC is not so fantastic for those looking to adorn their living rooms with a Christmas tree this festive season.
Fake trees are out and natural pines are flying off their stumps, according to Christmas tree farms around the city.
At Willy’s Christmas tree farm at McGrath’s Hill in Sydney’s northwest, operator John Cappello said weekend sales were up 30 per cent on last year.
“It is just growing and growing — they come out now with video cameras, and they’re sending it to families overseas.”
But Mr Cappello said Sydney’s urban sprawl was limiting supply due to the space required to grow Christmas trees.
“As the urban sprawl goes out, a lot of the farms have closed down,” he said.
But there is some upkeep involved, with horticulturalist Simon Reid warning trees needed to be watered correctly each day so they didn’t drop their needles.
