The designs for Parramatta CBD’s first private hospital have been unveiled with the proposed $200 million facility expected to help address a shortfall of hospital beds in the region.

The Royal Parramatta Private Hospital will be on Hunter St, next to the $3 billion Parramatta Square redevelopment and the train station.

The 24-storey proposal includes 130 hospital beds with six operating theatre suites, day surgery units and pre-admission medical clinics.

There will also be opportunities for teaching and research facilities as well as both undergraduate and postgraduate medical and nursing training.

“Our initial estimates show that there is about a 3000-bed shortage, and even with new, similar projects planned at Blacktown and Westmead, there is still a lot of demand that needs to be met, especially when you consider the increase in population growth over the coming decades,” ICC Development Group CEO Harold Dakin said.

The hospital is to be located at 41-43 Hunter Street, Parramatta and will be named The Royal Parramatta Private Hospital.

“The Royal Parramatta Private Hospital will not only address an under-supply of local hospital beds, but also significantly add to Paramatta City’s fast-evolving commercial and residential skyline as it establishes itself as Sydney’s fast emerging second CBD.”

Mr Dakin said research carried out by their medical teams highlighted the current gaps and lengthy wait times for patients in the western and north-western Sydney catchments.

“So we’re pleased that this new facility can help play an important role in meeting existing and future health needs in the area,” he said.

Pending state government approval construction on the hospital will begin next year.

Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue chairman Christopher Brown said “this project has the potential to be a real asset for Parramatta – there’s nothing like it in the CBD – and it should really complement what’s happening down the road at Westmead”.

“Great cities are home to iconic buildings, and I think there’s an opportunity for the Royal Paramatta Private Hospital to establish itself as a landmark site, right in the heart of the city,” he said.

ICC is expected to submit its plans to the NSW Government’s Joint Regional Planning Panel in the coming months.
