RED-faced prison officials have been forced to return four pizza ovens that were bought as part of an ill-fated rewards scheme for some of state’s worst prisoners.
The state opposition had slammed revelations management at John Morony Correctional Centre were setting up a “pizza club” for its maximum security inmates.
Corrective Services NSW claimed the scheme was simply a proposal but sources inside the prison revealed the plan had progressed to the jail purchasing four countertop ovens.
A department spokeswoman said last week the appliances had been sent back.
“Four countertop ovens were ordered that have since been returned,” she said.
The Sunday Telegraph revealed earlier this month of plans to overhaul an existing incentive scheme for inmates, which also included “goodnight calls” from family members.
Opposition justice spokesman Guy Zangari said a pizza club for maximum security inmates was inappropriate.
