Phillip de Angelis, the son of one of Sydney’s richest families spent eight weeks at the exclusive Cabin rehabilitation centre in Thailand after he assaulted his socialite girlfriend, Nellie Tilley permanently disfiguring her, a court heard.
During his sentencing hearing in Central Local Court it was revealed that he had subjected Ms Tilley to 14 months of domestic violence related incidence which resulted in his arrest in 2016 after throwing a lighter at her with such force she required surgery to a scalp wound.
The 38-year-old was initially charged with more than 20 offences including choking the 52-year-old mother of three before pleading guilty to eight charges relating to domestic violence.
Phillip Boulton SC, said his client admitted he was the “violent offender” and at the time was drinking too much and using illegal drugs such as cocaine.
“Since his arrest underwent an eight weeks an intensive course at the Cabin rehabilitation centre in Thailand where he made significant progress in anger management, mediation and mindfulness,’’ Mr Boulton said in Thailand
He also said de Angelis underwent a battery of urine tests on a regular basis and that in the past two years there has been no relapse.
During one of the incidents the court heard the couple were in taxi returning home after dinner at a restaurant when he struck Ms Tilley in the mouth and also pushed her in the face during the cab ride. Mr Boulton said his client had not been before the courts for any similar offences but conceded he had been charged with three times for drink driving, twice on land and once on a boat and also a cocaine charge.
A psychiatric report from a doctor who treated de Angelis was handed to the court but suppressed with the agreement of both parties,
De Angelis will be sentenced next week. Ms Tilley was not in court
