Celebrity chef Pete Evans’ latest venture has once again landed him in hot water with health experts, this time over his alkaline water claims.

The “Pete Evans Healthy Everyday Alkaline H20 with pH 10+” water has the same pH level as many household cleaners.

Professor Paul Rolan, Professor of Pharmacology at Adelaide University said drinking such a high pH level of water was unsafe.

“A pH level of 10 is not safe to drink. Where is the evidence this is healthy? And we need to ask him, is this safe for people with kidney disease?” Prof Rolan said.

Last September the My Kitchen Rules judge announced the launch of his Alkaline Spring Water pH10.

At $2.60 a bottle, Mr Evans claims that it “may assist in improving your body’s pH level”.

A pH level of 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic while above 7 is alkaline.

Sydney’s average drinking water pH level is 7.8, which is within the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines range of 6.5-8.5.

Alternative health practitioners claim alkaline water can reduce inflammation in the body by ridding it of acid, which they claim is caused by foods like meat and eggs.

“You can put in acid or alkaline but in order to keep the internal pH constant your kidneys and lungs get rid of it,” Prof Rolan said.

“This is a nine or 10 on the Richter scale of BS.”

The Sunday Telegraph tested three bottles of the Alkaline water, which claims to have pH 10+. All samples came in under 10 with pH 9.6, 9.7 and 9.6 respectively.

Steve Pettaras from Alka Power, who has partnered with Mr Evans, said the water bottles were independently tested by a water laboratory and accused some of those who had posted negative responses of being trolls from competitors in the water market.

Mr Evans did not respond to our questions.
