Gangotri Maharaj and her husband Vijay Maharaj were walking hand-in-hand when she was fatally hit by a cement truck, dragging her down the road in Sydney’s lower north shore.
Mr Maharaj collapsed to his knees, screaming “my wife, my wife” at the intersection of Albany St and Willoughby Rd, Crows Nest, about 11am today, witnesses said.
Jiraphat Seesai saw the horrific collision from inside the Siam Cabana Thai massage business.
“The truck was turning left and I saw the old man and the old lady, the old man was holding the old lady’s hand,” Mr Seesai said.
“They got crashed by the truck and the old lady (went) under the truck.
“The old man say ‘my wife, my wife’.
“I was in shock … everything in my body was shaking.”
A trail of blood stretched for 20 metres between the intersection and where the truck came to a stop.
Police believe the truck was turning left into Willoughby Rd when the woman was hit.
Mr Maharaj was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in shock and with minor injuries.
Meaghan Woodhouse heard tradesmen from a neighbouring building site scream before running out to the man and calling an ambulance.
“He was on his knees … he had some blood on the back of his head. He was just in shock,” Ms Woodhouse said.
The male driver behind the wheel of the cement truck was also taken to hospital for mandatory testing for drugs and alcohol.
An investigation has been launched into circumstances leading up to the crash.
Photos from the scene show the cement truck stopped near a line of parked cars.
Buses were diverted as emergency crews worked to clear the roadway.
