A MAN is in hospital after a pair of masked men opened fire in a suburban street in Sydney’s southwest.
Rabie Daher, 34, was shot four times in the driveway of a Peakhurst home about 8.15pm last night, while his friend was pistol-whipped.
Police — who arrived at the Johnstone St house to find Mr Daher bleeding profusely in the driveway — are now searching for two masked attackers.
Police Acting Superintendent Scott Bingham said Mr Daher and his male friend were returning home to his Peakhurst address when they were ambushed by two men dressed in dark clothing.
“The male that received the bullet wounds received four wounds to the chest, arm, back and buttocks. That person is being treated in a medical facility and is being operated on later today,” Sup Bingham said.
“Our inquiries so far have led us to believe the two males, the victims, had been returning to the address, where one male lives. They were waiting to enter the premises through the garage when they were approached.
“The other male has then been further assaulted and he’s been pistol-whipped before the two offenders ran from the scene, last seen running towards Evans St, Peakhurst and leaving in a light coloured sedan.
“Inside the house at the time was a female and two small children under 10, and thankfully they have been unharmed. The house was not shot.”
Mr Daher is in a stable condition and his injuries are not considered life-threatening, Supt Bingham said.
One strong line of inquiry being pursued is the shooting was linked to drug matter, and police said they aren’t ruling anything out.
“Currently we have eight investigators working on this full time,” Supt Bingham said
Neighbour Greta Harrison said Mr Daher’s two daughters were screaming out as they waited for paramedics to arrive.
“His two daughters were singing out ‘daddy daddy’ after it happened last night,” Ms Harrison said.
“I didn’t see anything, but I heard lots of gunshots, it was so loud.
“I thought it was something banging on the back door at first.”
Mr Daher’s mother, who was inside the home during the attack, says a child witnessed the unfolding attack.
“You raise your kids in the best schools to be good people ... I don’t know what’s happening,” she told the Nine Network.
The shooting took place in a quiet suburban street less than 100m away from a primary school
Police blocked off Johnstone St, establishing a crime scene with forensics going over the scene.
Police also taped off a car which was found near the scene of the shooting.
A nearby resident, who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, said police were searching for a car with P-plates, which could be connected to the attack.
The Daily Telegraph understands the woman who made the emergency call is the sister of the man who was critically injured.
This latest shooting comes after a man was also shot through the leg in Marsfield last night. Police are still investigating both incidents.
