Sydney rail commuters face afternoon peak hour delays following a fire on a freight train carrying bananas at Hornsby.
The fire broke out in a diesel tower refrigeration unit on the train as it travelled through Hornsby about 2pm.
No-one was injured. The train was moved off the main line to a siding at Thornleigh and was checked to ensure the fire did not spread.
NSW Fire and Rescue had mopped up the fire by 4pm but commuters were warned they needed to allow extra time to complete their journey.
“Customers travelling on the T1 North Shore, T9 Northern and Central Coast and Newcastle Lines are experiencing delays this afternoon,” a Sydney Trains spokesperson said.
“Electricity was cut and train services were stopped in the area so emergency services could respond to a fire in a container on a freight train.”
“Sydney Trains is working to recover services for the afternoon peak however there will be ongoing delays for customers.”
