Parramatta’s women make it one Eel of a grand final double act

HE party is just getting started in Parramatta with the club one week away from creating rugby league history.

No club has ever won the NRL and NRLW titles in the same season, but the Eels are two games away from creating something special.

The vibe in Sydney’s west is already buzzing with the Eels and Panthers set to duke it out in the biggest local derby we’ve ever seen in front of more than 80,000 fans at Accor Stadium.

Tickets will sell out in the coming days and the lines to get blue and gold merchandise at Peter Wynn’s Score will rival the queues for department stores on Boxing Day.

The story around the women’s team is out of this world after they brutally missed out on the finals in their inaugural season a few months ago, but are now 70 minutes away from the title having lost their first four games this season.

They needed to beat the Broncos by six points in the final round and hoped the Titans lost to the Roosters just to finish fourth.

And they then rode the wave of momentum to stun the unbeaten Chooks who were looking to defend their title.

They will play the Knights on Sunday who are also in their first finals series, hoping to overturn the result from the 2001 NRL grand final when the Eels were shocked by Andrew Johns and his teammates.

Newcastle did not win an NRLW game last season but recruited brilliantly with Broncos stars Millie Boyle and Tamika Upton heading south.
