Sports facilities, parks and playgrounds at suburbs including Toongabbie and Winston Hills are earmarked for major upgrades after Parramatta Council scored a $15 million State Government funding boost.

The six projects include an accessible playground, multipurpose sports court space, shaded areas and outdoor fitness equipment for Somerville Park at Eastwood and an upgraded amenities building at Max Ruddock Reserve at Winston Hills to support sports clubs.

At Toongabbie, Sue Savage Reserve will gain a skate park, BMX fitness stations, a carpark, accessible toilets and fitness stations.

The BMX track will be placed near the basketball courts at the adjacent Reynolds Park Playground, which is also slated for an upgrade as part of the masterplan for the two recreation drawcards.

Major improvements are in store at Kilpack Park, Carlingford, where there will be new play and fitness equipment.

Dog owners will also welcome an off-leash area for their furry friends at West Epping Park.

Play equipment will also be allocated at parks in Dundas for youngsters.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna Davis said the projects, which would be funded through the WestInvest community grants program, were selected after community feedback about the need for more open and green spaces to support the city’s rapid population growth.

Parramatta’s population of 287,289 is expected to soar to 487,731 by 2041, with about three per cent growth each year.

“Our community is at the heart of everything we do,’’ she said.

“These projects reflect what they’ve been telling us they want to see across our city.’’

Cr Davis said every corner of the region was impacted by Parramatta’s transformation into a global city and funding was demanded.
