‘Over the top’ scheme to be reviewed after stories of teachers caught up in hours of admin

THE controversial data collection program which was expected to waste the time of frontline teachers has been shelved after a Daily Telegraph investigation.

The NSW Education Department last night announced it had ordered a review into the software which would force teachers to fill in more than 1000 questions about the progress of their students every five weeks.

The Daily Telegraph exposed deficiencies in the scheme last month and revealed teachers’ concerns that they would spend more time doing admin work than teaching classes.

The problem had become so severe during the trial that substitute teachers were sent in to relieve permanent staff so they could complete the onerous data entry scheme.

NSW Primary Principals’ Association executive Rob Walker described the scheme at the time as “over the top”.
