DESPITE a cover of rain and gloom yesterday morning, there was no mistaking the mighty hulk of the biggest cruise ship ever to visit Australia as the Ovation Of The Seas entered Sydney Harbour for the first time.
Even in the mist and incessant drizzle, the ocean giant still cut an imposing figure, all 350m of her.
And despite the weather, many admirers were still on hand to welcome the massive ship to Circular Quay.
Costing more the $1.3 billion, the Royal Caribbean goliath can carry 5000 passengers over 16 guest decks. There are 1500 staff on board when the ship is operating at full capacity.
Ovation’s two-day visit to Sydney is expected to inject more than $3.3 million in passenger spending into the city’s economy.
The ship will use Sydney as its summer base, bolstering the national economy to the tune of $35 million. Ovation Of The Seas weighs 168,666 tons, making her the fourth-largest cruise ship in the world and by far the largest to call Sydney its base.
If stood upright, the ship would be almost as tall as Uluru. Among its many features, some of which have never been seen on a cruise ship during an Australian visit, are an indoor skydiving experience, robotic bar tenders, dodgem cars and a viewing capsule that towers above the decks.
The ship will weigh anchor at 4pm today and then head to New Zealand before returning.
