Jewish community leaders have reacted with outrage to plans by a Sydney mosque to hold a memorial service on Saturday for three Hezbollah fighters killed by the Israeli army in recent days.
On Thursday the Facebook page of the Al Rahman Mosque in the southwest Sydney suburb of Kingsgrove advertised it would be holding a service on Saturday evening “To commemorate the death of our late beloved Taha Abbas Abbas, Ali Marmar and Hussam Ibrahim”.
The three men were all members of the Iranian-backed Shiite terrorist organisation Hezbollah which controls Southern Lebanon.
On Wednesday Hezbollah announced that Abbas and Marmar had been killed while “on jihad”.
The pair were killed by an IDF drone strike as they were firing mortar shells into Israel from Southern Lebanon.
Ibrahim was killed by Israeli shelling earlier this month.
According to Hezbollah he was “martyred as a result of the Zionist aggression on south Lebanon”.
Plans to honour three Hezbollah fighters have been condemned by Jewish Community leaders.
The Zionist Federation of Australia President Jeremy Leibler said it was wrong to be honouring the dead of a proscribed terrorist organisation.
“Honouring the memory of terrorists killed while carrying out a terrorist act is likely a breach of Australian law,” he said.
“I hope the Australian Federal Police will be having a careful look at this event.”
He said “the idea that a group of Australians would be holding this service is deeply worrying. Hezbollah has carried out attacks across the world. It is a threat to all Australians. “Having these terrorists honoured in Australia is a direct challenge to Australian multiculturalism, and should be condemned by everyone.”
