Neighbours in a new housing estate in southwest Sydney are shocked after a six-month-old baby boy died and a woman was arrested on Thursday afternoon.
The infant boy was found unresponsive and pulled out of water at a home on Seaborn Ave, Oran Park, about 4pm on Thursday after police responded to a concern-for-welfare call.
Paramedics rushed to the scene to treat the baby and give him CPR before racing the him to Campbelltown Hospital in a critical condition, but he could not be revived.
One neighbour on Seaborn Ave saw the scene unfold after the boy was found, and told The Daily Telegraph it was “heartbreaking”.
The man, who asked not to be named, comforted the grandparents of the child as his “lifeless” body was rushed into an ambulance.
“(The family) had just moved in last week, they seemed so lovely, two small kids … they were such a cute family, the grandparents were so nice,” the neighbour said.
“We spoke a few times, said hi, then (on Thursday) I came out and found police everywhere … I held (the grandparents), comforted them as they took the baby away.”
A woman was arrested at the scene and taken to Camden Police Station, where she is assisting police.
The neighbour, who is new to Oran Park himself, said the scene was “heartbreaking”.
“We moved here to start our own family, this is our first home … the kids from the home are so young, I just feel for the family,” he said.
Police have cordoned off the home with tape as investigators remained inside.
A police four wheel drive stood guard at the edge of the property before forensics crews turned up in a white van and started taking photographs.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
It is not yet known what caused the child’s death.
A new estate built on the bones of an old car raceway, Oran Park is an area popular with young families.
