The Victorian Building Authority released a statement last month revealing they would review a number of projects by Icon Constructions.

The investigation by the VBA came as Icon emptied out residents of Opal Tower on Christmas Eve after residents heard cracks from inside the 37-storey complex.

The owners of units in the troubled tower have called on Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Premier Gladys Berejiklian to intervene after being told last week to return to a building they say is a construction site.

Last week builder Icon told residents of 97 units they would no longer be reimbursed for hotel rooms and meals after the body corporate’s engineers Cardno declared those units safe to occupy.

Opal Tower residents say the government has to restore Australians’ faith in the construction industry and set an example for those working in the industry.

Engineers appointed by the government to oversee the remediation earlier this month said the tower was structurally sound but significant works were required to repair and strengthen some damaged beams.

The NSW government is a co-developer of the site and owns 43 units in the building which are rented as affordable housing.

Icon, which has about $1.8 billion of work under way or contracted across Australia is backed by Japan’s Kajima Corporation, which is listed in Tokyo with a market value of more than $12.5bn.
