Opal glitch gives discount to Woolworths customers

A Woolworths counter was swarmed by customers after a website revealed the faulty machine was giving discounts to customers recharging their Opal cards.

A HANDFUL of lucky Sydney commuters scored a 10 per cent discount when topping up their Opal cards at a CBD counter due to a short-lived Woolworths system error.

The tip-off was posted on discount website OzBargain at 7.12am after a user received a discount off his $100 top up at Town Hall Woolworths.

The user wrote that one staff member told him “Opal is offering 10 per cent off”, while another confirmed it was “a system error”.

“Massive queue at Woolies Town Hall right now,” Kerfuffle posted on the bargain website.

“Guy in front of me is going to take a while as he’s topping up two Opal cards.”

Other commuters joined the thread posting screenshots showing receipts with prices marked down before Woolworths fixed the technical error.

Woolworths has not confirmed what caused the technical glitch, however, staff at the top-up counter confirmed the problem had been rectified after two hours.

One Woolworths employee thought the discount was compensation after Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced earlier this week that Opal fares were going up from July 2.
