One person is in hospital after a weatherboard house was completely destroyed by fire on Sydney’s north shore overnight.
It took more than 30 firefighters to extinguish the blaze which completely engulfed the double-storey house in Ganora St in Gladesville about 5am.
Emergency services rushed to the scene following calls for help but it took 30 firefighters with six trucks about an hour to bring it under control.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said one man suffered minor burns to his hands and smoke inhalation and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.
NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said when crews first arrived on the scene they had to evacuate neighbouring homes in the suburban street because the house was completely engulfed in flames and posed a risk to other homes in the suburban street.
“They found the house totally engulfed in fire when they arrived … it was actually impinging on the adjoining house,” he said.
“Because the fire was so intense, they got to work on the outside to stop the fire spreading to an adjoining property which did suffer some minor heat and smoke damage.”
After the fire was brought under control, firefighters used atmospheric gas detection technology and thermal imaging cameras to make sure the fire was completely extinguished and there was no danger posed by carbon monoxide in the adjoining properties.
He said once the damaged home is deemed safe, fire investigators will begin to try and work out what started the blaze.
