Four dead, others seriously injured after horror night on NSW roads

A man has been charged after a fatal crash in Sydney’s southwest on Wednesday with the current NSW road toll rising to 298, surpassing last year’s 290. It’s an alarming increase as the state approaches the Christmas-New Year period.

A man remains in custody on remand after a fatal crash in Sydney’s south west which was part of a horror Wednesday night of road incidents across NSW.

It brought the current state road toll to 298, surpassing last year’s 290, an alarming increase as the state approaches the Christmas-New Year period, a time notoriously marked by high road fatalities.

The 47-year-old male driver was allegedly involved in a two-vehicle crash on the Hume Motorway in Ingleburn on Wednesday which resulted in a passenger, a 37-year-old man, who later died after being taken to Liverpool Hospital.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Motorway shortly after 10.30pm with police finding a ute and truck had collided.

The truck driver, a 36-year-old man, was not injured.

While the 47-year-old was trapped for a short time, he was released and taken to hospital in a serious condition.

He was charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death – speed greater than 45km over limit and refused bail at Campbelltown Local Court on Thursday.

Southbound lanes on the Hume Motorway were closed for several hours but were later reopened.

In a separate incident, a 28-year-old man was fatally struck in a two-vehicle collision on Old Windsor Rd in Seven Hills.

Emergency services were called shortly after midnight following reports that the man, who had been standing outside his vehicle on the roadside, was struck by another car.

Despite first aid attempts by police officers, he died at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, Harpreet Singh, was uninjured and has been taken to Blacktown Police Station.

The 42-year-old was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), and driver use mobile phone when not permitted.

He was refused bail to appear before Blacktown Local Court on Thursday.

In Sydney’s east, a man in his 20s sustained critical head injuries when his car crashed into a tree on Oxford St in Woollahra.

Emergency services extricated the man from the vehicle before he was transported to St Vincent’s Hospital in critical condition.

His female passenger was uninjured and is assisting police with their inquiries.

A crime scene has been established at the site.

And in the state’s north west, a man died after his car crashed into another, causing his vehicle to roll several times.

Emergency services rendered first aid but a man died at the scene on the Carnarvon Highway in Ashley, 18km north of Moree.

The man is yet to be formally identified, however, is believed to be aged 27.

A passenger inside the car was uninjured and he was taken to Moree Hospital for observation.

The 74-year-old male driver of the other car was also uninjured.

He was taken to Moree Hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene has been established and officers attached to New England Police District are investigating the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

In Goulburn a woman has died after being hit by a car.

About 4am on Thursday emergency services were called to the Hume Highway, near Sydney Rd, Boxers Creek, following reports a pedestrian had been hit by a car.

Officers attached to The Hume Police District attended and were told a woman had been on the road when she was hit by a four-wheel drive travelling in a north bound lane.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 32-year-old woman at the scene, before she was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital where she later died.

The male driver of the four-wheel drive, aged 63, was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police established a crime scene, and an investigation has commenced with the assistance of specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
