Police are investigating whether a car carrying four friends that flipped onto its nose and slammed into a power pole was involved in a high-speed street race at the time of the crash.
The horror smash has left driver Zac Wood fighting for his life in hospital and officers are seeking information about a red car that may have been racing his blue Honda Civic.
Emergency workers were called to the Greater Western Highway at Girraween just after 10.30pm on Saturday night and found the wreckage of the overturned sedan precariously perched on its end.
Dozens of emergency crews work desperately to free Mr Wood, 20, Ryan Stoecker, Joseph Catania and Daniel Paladino, all 22, who were then rushed to hospital.

Mr Wood suffered critical injuries and is receiving treatment in Liverpool Hospital. The other three were taken to Westmead Hospital in serious but stable conditions.
One friend told The Daily Telegraph: “They’re a good bunch of boys who stay out of trouble, the driver especially.”
Police are seeking information about the red car that may have been racing with the sedan, with officers saying the two cars were seen driving erratically in the moments before the crash.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the crashed car’s position presented a significant challenge, with firefighters working for more than an hour to free the four injured men.
“The vehicle was resting against the pole on its nose — the pole snapped in half,” Supt Dewberry said.
“Anytime you’ve got a pole that’s snapped and a car in a precarious situation, it needs to be stabilised and you need to get on an elevated platform.
“It’s complicated — you’ve got people inside, you’ve got the pole and the stability of the vehicle (to worry about).”
Family members of the four men took to social media to voice their shock.
“Please … pray for my brother’s friends especially his best friend, who has been in surgery since midnight,” one woman wrote.
“ type this in tears but if there was any favour I would ask of anyone, it would be to pray for these boys especially Zac.”
