The newest list of the state’s favourite baby names has been released, with Isla taking the crown for the most popular choice for girls.

Names Isla and Amelia battled it out for the top spot this year, separated by only four registered births, according to the Department of Customer Service.

Isla’s number one ranking and move up from third spot ended the dominance of names including Charlotte, Olivia and Amelia, which have been the only favourites in the top position since Chloe in 2011.

Oliver has reclaimed the throne as king of the boy’s, after being the top choice nine out of the last 10 years.

The popular name for boys was swiped from number one by Noah last year, but has risen to the top this year by just 18 more registered births.

Ten new names entered the girl’s top 100 including Amara, Maisie, Margot, Lucia, Lottie, Cleo, Kaia, Callie, Kiara and Zahra.

The boys saw just eight new names with Miles, Isaiah, Darcy, Tommy, Spencer, Parker, Mateo and Marcus.

Names that did not make the cut included Riley, Gabriella, Harlow, Claire, Anastasia, Leah, Charlie, Elodie, Jasmine and Quinn for girls and Christian, Nicholas, Hamish, Vincent, Connor, Ashton, Dylan and Julian for boys.

Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages Theresa Fairman confirmed the state has seen over 85,820 registered births for babies in the 2023 calendar year.

“No matter their name, I congratulate all families who welcomed a newborn in 2023, each child is precious,” Ms Fairman said.

Parramatta parents Sam and Brittany Morton welcomed their second daughter – Sophia, on the 12th of December 2023.

The name – which the pair say they chose after a “painstaking” process comparing names they loved, is the ninth most popular name in NSW for baby girls.

“We’ve got a cousin called Sophie and we loved that name but obviously we couldn’t double up on it,” Mr Morton said.

“Britt thought of Sophia and we both fell in love with it.

“We didn’t check any list but we didn’t know any other babies called Sophia that were recently born. It was unique enough in our circles.”

Mr Morton said what was particularly special about the birth of their second child was her sex was a “surprise” on the day.

“We didn’t know what she was going to be when she was born. I was able to give her to Britt and say ‘hey Britt, meet Sophia’,” the father of two said.

Sophia is the couple’s second baby girl, having welcomed daughter Isla two – and – a – half years earlier.

“We got two girls with names in the list,” Mr Morton said.

“We’re not surprised (names Sophia and Isla are so popular).”
