Sydney will finally see some relief from the heat on Tuesday night, with a midnight southerly change set to drop temperatures by up to 15 degrees.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a “slow moving” southerly change sweeping up the coastline will hit Greater Sydney between 10pm and midnight on Tuesday after the city weathered a five-day scorcher.

BOM Forecaster Abrar Shabren said despite “several hours” of heat ahead, the cool change was on its way and would see temperatures plummet overnight.

“There’s still a few hours of very uncomfortable conditions ahead… but there’s a strong coastal change around Bega currently, it will move to reach the Sydney metro around midnight,” Mr Shabren said.

“We’ll start to see the southerly around 10 to 11pm, and we’re expecting temperatures drop drop up to 15 degrees below today’s maximum in most places.”

It follows the final day of a scorching five-day weather event for Greater Sydney, which recorded tops of 41.6C in Sydney Olympic Park, Holsworthy and Sydney Airport.

In the city, the mercury reached 37.1C.

Mr Shabren said the cool change and another strong southerly hitting the state’s south and central west would usher in “cool, comfortable weather” for the rest of the working week.

“We could see isolated showers and rain to the south but for much of Sydney on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we’ll see temperatures in the 20s,” Mr Shabren said.

A top of 26 is expected tomorrow in Penirth and Sydney’s CBD will see 23C, while on Thursday and Friday temperatures will drop into the low 20s.
