NSW weather: Towns evacuated as south coast braces for major flooding

A line of severe thunderstorms bringing damaging winds and hail to inland NSW will unleash more wild weather on Tuesday as it moves east.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning stretching from Bourke to Tumbarumba and another for Canberra and Queanbeyan after a day of “widespread” destructive winds, large hail and heavy rain on Monday.

BOM senior forecaster Jake Phillips said a “large number” of severe storms were active throughout the state and had brought strong winds and heavy rain to widespread areas.

Mr Phillips said the wild weather was being caused by a cold front which was “setting storms off”.

“There’s a long line of storms extending past the Queensland border, starting in the northern inland areas of Bourke and Walgett, with a continuous line into the southeast of the state; there’s a lot of storm cells in among that area,” he said.

“Canberra has had reports of issues with powerlines and pretty gusty conditions created by storms passing through … in Wagga there’s hail the size of 50c pieces, and reports of wind damage. In other areas we’ve seen sharp bursts of rain, like 36mm in Forbes in 15 minutes, and there’s lightning active across the state.”

Mr Phillips warned that the severe weather was pushing east but said conditions would ease into a cold snap.

“Sydney is expecting storm activity,” he said. “Later in the week a wintry change will come through on Friday.’’
