Premier Chris Minns has labelled a vandalism attack on his Kogarah office as an act of “arrogance”, saying that the spray painting of the word “murderer” on his office wouldn’t change his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“I think there’s … an arrogance that says that you can break the law … But ultimately, I think it’s really wasting time and money and it’s irritating, but it’s not much more,” he said.
He added his focus amid the conflict overseas was on social cohesion in NSW.
“It’s really hard for me to know what motivates someone to commit an act of vandalism. Our focus has always been … community cohesion and peace in New South Wales,” he said.
“I’m not responsible for places around the world, particularly not in the Middle East, I am responsible for peace right here in Sydney in this state. And that’s what our approach to this complex issue has been.”
Mr Minns, who has previously been critical of rowdy pro-Palestine protests and acts of anti-Semitism in Sydney, said he wouldn’t change his commentary on the issue.
“Yes, you’ve got a right absolute right to protest,” he said.
“You’ve also got a responsibility to treat other people that live in this city with respect.
“And we’re not going to change our ways in relation to this because you can see very quickly if we’re not very clear about public and community expectations around issues that have happened in other parts of the world, it can deteriorate very quickly. We’ve seen that in other major capital cities around the world.”
The office was vandalised overnight with red paint splattered over the doors and the word “murderer” tagged on the wall.
It is understood to be the fourth time Mr Minns’ office in Kogarah has been targeted.
The office has previously been targeted by pro-Palestinian protesters campaigning against the war in Gaza.
It is unknown what prompted the latest incident.
