NSW Police pursuit ends in power pole smash on Tweed Coast Rd, Hastings Point

A manhunt is underway after a wild police pursuit through a small northern NSW coastal township resulted in a driver smashing into a power pole and fleeing the scene.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers are heading up the investigation following the pursuit of a sedan between Pottsville and Hastings Point on Tuesday morning.

About 9.50am on Tuesday, a patrol car attempted to stop a sedan on Environmental Dr, Pottsville, after noticing the car was not displaying a rear number plate, a NSW Police spokesman said.

When the driver failed to stop as directed, a pursuit north along Tweed Coast Rd was initiated until the sedan crashed into a power pole.

Police say the driver ran from the scene and was not found despite an “extensive” search.

The sedan was towed and will undergo forensic examination by specialist police as the investigation continues.

Stunned locals took to social media in the wake of the chase, with one person saying a police helicopter (Polair) was deployed at the scene, along with road spikes in a bid to stop the alleged offender.

“Driver on the run. Police put out spikes. Polair circling around Cudgen Creek and the back of the North Star Resort. Police are walking through creek beds and the bush behind Hastings Point Caravan Park,” a post read.

Management from the North Star Resort said the facility was not entered and did not wish to provide further comment.
