ONE of Sydney’s oldest animal shelters facing closure has finally found a new home, with the State Government stepping in today with an offer of Crown land at Kurnell for a new home.

The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home has cared for homeless animals in Carlton since 1946, but itself struggled to find a home after the land they have leased was put up for redevelopment in 2015.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian today announced the government has offered the charity the site — worth $500,000 — to build state of the facilities, including a larger cattery, an on-site veterinary clinic and exercise yards.

“The dogs can bark as loudly as they want,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Last year the home reunited 862 lost pets with their owners and found homes for 1741 animals in their care, which is a tremendous effort by all the volunteers.”

The new lease, on remediated land near the Sydney Desalination Plan, will last for 50 years.

“This will increase capacity substantially,” Ms Berejiklian said. “But also have on-site ability to walk the animals and provide veterinarian care.

“What I love most about this centre is there is no final date for the animals. They make an effort to give every animal a home, not matter how long they have been here.”

Sydney Dogs and Cats Home president Wendy Langley said the new centre would triple the capacity of the organisation, which now covers animals from eight local government areas.

She said supporters had raised $1.5 million and now the land was secured they hoped to be able to raise the rest of the money required from other supporters.

“We have architects working on the site …. when we get all the reports we need, we will submit the DA,” Ms Langley said. “It’s all happening.” She said their current lease was on a month-by-month basis.
