The NSW government has unleashed a stinging attack on the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party, accusing the minor party of secretly backing guns for children and wanting to bring semiautomatic weapons into NSW.

In a show of their concern over losing a string of marginal electorates, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Deputy Premier John Barilaro unleashed the attack while touring the North Coast, where the Nationals are at risk.

Mr Barilaro said a vote for the shooters would result in a Labor Greens government which is the “worst outcome for regional NSW”.

“I think the Shooters Party is absolutely dangerous. Their policies of giving guns to 10 year olds and relaxing John Howard’s gun laws are recent policies,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

“We will not stand for 10 year olds being given guns in NSW.”

When it was pointed out to the premier that the shooters had dumped the plan to allow 10 year olds to have guns, she said: “they are pretending that they’re not party positions — they are,” she said.

She said the SFF backed bringing semiautomatics into NSW and she would not support a party that “believes it’s OK to shoot elephants”.

She said these will be “mainstream policies” if Labor and the SFF govern NSW.

The SFF is threatening to eat into the Nationals vote in a series of marginal seats and could claim Barwon or Murray.
