NSW floods live updates: SES run supplies

The SES have been rescuing people in more ways than one, including making sure cut-off communities have vital supplies. Follow our NSW floods live blog.

They’ve filled sandbags, helped clean up homes and performed daring rescues.

But as the sun finally began to shine on the flood ravaged Hawkesbury River on Tuesday afternoon a team of SES volunteers did some work that although different, was just as vital.

In three little boats they ferried bread, milk, tuna, pasta, nappies and toilet paper 25 minutes across the murky water to Wilberforce - one of the many communities that has been left stranded by the floods.

Onboard one of the boats was Robert Cooper.

The 39-year-old has been an SES volunteer for more than 25 years and is one of more than 1,700 who have been on hand across the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Colo River areas since the flash flooding began.

Mr Cooper has seen many confronting disaster scenes but said he never forgets the reason he’s there: to help.

“We see different types of natural disasters and as we know in Australia, they’re not uncommon unfortunately,” he said.

“We started out in our local communities on Friday night helping with the storms, and then we came up here to help.

“We did a run across the river with pharmaceutical supplies this morning and now we’re taking food and essentials to Wilberforce.

“I know it sounds cliched, but it’s all about helping the community - it really is.”
