In April he exchanged jewellery and a motorbike for an $11,500 loan from the shopkeeper — but Mulgrew, McCaffery and McPhail claimed some of the items he had pawned belonged to the Finks.

But things allegedly turned sour on April 28 when the three high-ranking Finks allegedly demanded the shopkeeper hand the items to them.

Police allege that Mulgrew, McCaffery and McPhail attended the pawnbrokers almost daily and that on at least one occasion he was assaulted.

When the man refused to hand over the rings police will allege the men threatened to destroy the pawnbroker’s business.

NSW Police Raptor Squad commander Detective Superintendent Jason Weinstein said an investigation into the alleged extortion began after the pawnbroker reported their threats to police.

“The Finks outlaw motorcycle gang then (allegedly) tried to extort that premises to recover moneys they believed were owed to the club itself,” Det Supt Weinstein said.

“It’s probably a timely reminder to people that think joining an outlaw motorcycle gang is a good life.

“The reality is that there are strict rules these organisations place upon their members and when they leave, there are significant financial penalties that they determine they impose upon their former members.”

Det Supt Weinstein said the pawnbroker caught up in the internal Finks dispute owned a “lawful business” and was an innocent third party.

Officers investigating the issue carried out a series of eight raids across NSW on Wednesday.

Raptor Squad members searched homes at Chatswood, North Richmond, North St Marys, Tregear, Bidwell, Riverstone and Raymond Terrace.
