The spread of coronavirus may be slowing across NSW but some Sydney suburbs are continuing to record fresh clusters of the disease as it moves insidiously through the community.

New figures have revealed the Sydney suburbs with the most confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past month – showing the latest hotspots for the virus.

Infection rates across the state may be slowing, but some Sydney suburbs are bucking the trend and continuing to record outbreaks of the disease.

Fresh data from NSW Health shows the LGAs with the highest number of locally-acquired cases over the past four weeks to date. In total, there have been 37 cases in the four weeks to May 25.

It shows Penrith, Strathfield  and Waverley have emerged as the newest frontlines for the disease with the largest number of coronavirus infections in the state over the past month.

The Penrith LGA  has the highest number of cases in NSW over the past month with six, one of which could not be traced to a source. The cluster comes after an outbreak was linked to the Newmarch House aged care facility in Caddens after a nurse unwittingly passed on the disease to patients and staff.

Waverley also continues to be a hotspot for the disease and this month has recorded three cases  - two which could not be traced to a contact. The area has led the state with major clusters of the disease since they first started to appear in Bondi and surrounds.

Strathfield has also emerged with new clusters of the disease with one untraceable infection. The LGA - which encompasses Belfield, Flemington, Homebush and Strathfield - has had nineteen infections since the pandemic began. Five of these cases were in the last month and three in the past week.

Blacktown, the Blue Mountains, Canada Bay, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Goulburn Mulwaree, Inner West and the Sutherland Shire have all recorded two cases of the virus over the past month.

According to NSW Health, the Nepean Blue Mountains region had a significantly higher rate of COVID-19 compared with other LHDs given their population.

It comes as the rate of COVID-19  infections across the state slows. The number of infections in the week ending May 16 dropped 8 per cent while the number of locally-acquired cases also fell 25 per cent.

Across NSW, there are 3,092 cases and have been 48 deaths (excluding two Queensland cases).

The large majority of COVID-19 infections in NSW were acquired outside of NSW while 40 per cent were acquired locally.
