NSW cops call for calm on roads as speeding Ferrari driver clocked 180km/h in 80km/h zone

NSW police have called for calm on Christmas roads as a speeding Ferrari driver is clocked at 180km/h in a 80km/h zone.

NSW motorists are being urged to be extra cautious and take breaks over Christmas after 19 people were charged with drink driving offences and 900 drivers hit with speeding fines in just one night.

Operation Safe Arrival, an annual high-visibility policing operation, began on December 21 and will continue until January 1.

Some high-profile cases already have NSW Police seeing red.

Just after midnight on Monday police detected a red Ferrari travelling at 180km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The male driver, aged in his 20s, was charged and ordered to appear in Waverley Court in January.

More than 46,000 random breath tested were conducted by police on Christmas Eve with five drivers charged with high-range drink driving.

A 49-year-old man was stopped early Tuesday morning after allegedly travelling more than 160km/h in a 100km/h zone on the M2 at Baulkham Hills. Police say he returned a breath analysis of 0.228 before his licence was suspended.

“Police are disappointed that people continue to behave irresponsibility on the roads and put others lives at risk,” Highway Patrol Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said.

“Those who wish to consume alcohol during festive celebrations, need to have a Plan B and think about a designated driver for the next morning as well”.

“Alcohol leaves the body slowly, which means you could very well still be over the limit the next day,” he said.

Police have handed out 5883 infringements across NSW since the start of Operation Safe Arrival in addition to 3502 speeding fines, 183 drink-driving charges and recorded two deaths.

Among them was a 19-year-old girl near Narrandera who was in a ute that left the road and rolled on Saturday night.

She died in hospital on Sunday.

The 19-year-old male driver remains in hospital.

Double demerit points will remain in place over the long weekend for all speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences.
