The NRL grand final is heading back to the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2020 for the first time in 33 years.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal the famous old ground will be the venue for premiership deciders while both ANZ and Allianz stadiums are undergoing $2.3 billion revamps.
The State Government will announce tomorrow plans to build a rectangular 75,000 seat stadium at ANZ Stadium and a 45,000 seater at Allianz Stadium, both to be knocked down and rebuilt from scratch.
In return for the government providing two new stadiums, NRL boss Todd Greenberg has agreed to keep the 2020 grand final in Sydney in 2020 while both stadiums are out of action.
Greenberg knocked back multimillion-dollar offers from QLD and Victoria to take the game interstate.
Work will start on Alllianz Stadium at the end of next season.
Cricket Australia joins stadium war in bid to halt SCG fall from grace
The redevelopment of ANZ Stadium will begin after the 2019 grand final.
Both venues could take up to three years to rebuild.
The last grand final at the SCG was back in 1987 when Paul Vautin captained the Manly Sea Eagles to victory over Canberra.
The SCG now holds 47,000 fans.
