A crack in a rail on the City Circle has caused a ripple effect of delays across both directions of the T1 train line during Monday evening peak hour.
Commuters on the North Shore and Western line service are now experiencing more than 90 minutes of delays both to and from the City with photos of North Sydney station revealing passengers crammed into the stop.
Sydney Trains told commuters at 4.40pm that the delays were due to “urgent signal equipment repairs” and “urgent track equipment repairs” before the issue was diagnosed as a “small crack in a rail between Town Hall and Central” after 7pm.
Travellers were warned via social media that train services were “travelling at reduced speed” and stopping between stations and at stations frequently “for long periods of time”.
Frustrated passengers took to social media to vent their frustration, with some complaining they had been on-board services for an hour and a half.

“I’m an hour late and the train’s only moved one stop …” said another user.
One passenger described the situation as “farcical” and said Sydney train delays were “getting beyond a joke”.
At 6:30pm the public transport service revealed further “urgent” repairs for track signalling equipment were also in the works, affecting Citybound and Westbound train services.
