Nightclub owner Julian Tobias allegedly attacked by associate Joshua Clapp

High-profile socialite and nightclub owner Julian Tobias was treated at hospital earlier this month after being allegedly assaulted by a well-known business associate, who was later arrested and charged.

One of the eastern suburbs’ most prominent nightclub owners was allegedly assaulted by a business associate in a row at Potts Point venue earlier this month.

Socialite businessman Julian Tobias ended up in hospital after police allege he was assaulted by well-known interior designer Joshua Clapp in the early hours of April 7.

The pair were partying at a club on Darlinghurst Road in Potts Point when police allege Clapp, 50, attacked Tobias, 44.

Tobias, a one time Cleo Bachelor of the Year finalist, attended a medical centre later that day before receiving treatment in St Vincent’s Hospital.

According to NSW Police, a report was made to police and officers from Kings Cross Police Area Command commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested Clapp at Kings Cross Police Station about 10am on April 14.

He was charged with two counts of common assault and was given conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on May 3.

A temporary AVO was also put in place to protect Tobias, with Clapp ordered to stay away from him.

Clapp is a well-known identity in the eastern suburbs hospitality clique, and is the face behind Steel and Stitch – an interior design and construction company that specialises in hospitality venues.

The 50-year-old was responsible for the design and concept behind several hot spots, including the Flamingo Lounge, Franca Brasserie, Intercontinental at Double Bay and Tobias’ exclusive club Bedouin.

Tobias made his entry into the night-life business almost two decades ago when he launched Potts Point institution The Club.

Since then, he has opened Sydney Harbour’s famous floating day club The Island and Sussudio in Potts Point.

The 44-year-old has amassed 18,000 followers on Instagram and is a permanent fixture on the social scene – often seen partying at his venues.

Both Clapp and Tobias were contacted by the Saturday Telegraph but did not respond to questions about the alleged incident.
