Newington College explores expansion of Wyvern K-6 campus to include Horaceville ahead of going co-ed in 2026

As it readies itself for the first intake of girls in less than two years, Newington has begun investigating how to incorporate a Victorian terrace into its K-6 campus.

Newington explores expansion to go co-ed

Elite boys’ school Newington College is “exploring” ways to expand its infants and primary campus at Stanmore as it prepares to go co-ed.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Newington is investigating options to integrate Horaceville, a heritage-listed property it owns next door to the K-6 site.

Newington bought Horaceville — an 1880s-era Victorian terrace — from the Church of England Deaconess Institution Sydney Limited in January 2009 for a tidy $5.2 million, according to property records.

The potential of Horaceville was highlighted in a presentation to parents last week on the future of the junior school, known as Wyvern.

A Newington spokeswoman told The Daily Telegraph: “The College considers all of its property options as part of a broader approach to master planning.

“In the case of Horaceville, we are in the early stages of exploring concepts to integrate the property into our Wyvern House campus,” she said.

The spokeswoman declined to answer any other questions.

Horaceville sits beside Wyvern’s multipurpose sports field on Trafalgar St.

In recent times it has accommodated Newington teachers, and it is possible that its new use could be as a home for girl borders.

At one stage Horaceville was a lodge for the nurses who worked at a nearby private hospital that operated until the 1990s.

There has been speculation within the local community that Horaceville could be demolished.

This appears to be unlikely, given the property appears to be heritage-protected. Inner West Council said it did not have an active development application from Newington and that it wasn’t in discussions with the college.
