New poll reveals slump in support for Labor

Australians would rather have a beer or a meal with Anthony Albanese than Peter Dutton — but would pick Dutton over Albo if they had to put up a shelf or needed someone to open the batting.

That’s according to a new poll that asked voters to describe the two political leaders personally.

The Prime Minister was the pick for having a chat at the pub, hosting a party and manning the barbecue.

But voters think the Opposition Leader would beat the PM at solving practical problems like putting out a kitchen counter fire and putting up a shelf.

They would also be more likely to let him hold the map on a car trip and think he would be best at opening the batting.

But, in a more serious finding for the Prime Minister, a considerable number of the respondents in the 2000 voter GXO Strategies/ J.L. Partners poll used the words “weak”, “liar” and “useless” when asked to describe him.

In contrast, the most popular word to describe Mr Dutton was “strong”, closely followed by “arrogant”, “boring” and “untrustworthy”.

Mr Albanese was ahead of Mr Dutton on who would make the better Prime Minister by 40 per cent to 36 per cent, with about 23 per cent undecided.

The bad news for Mr Dutton was that he was much less popular among women than men.

Based on the survey, 41 per cent of men and 40 per cent of women prefer Mr Albanese.

But while 42 per cent of men prefer Mr Dutton, only 31 per cent of women favoured him.

On the other hand his net favourability rating — which adds the people who think he is doing a good job and takes away those who don’t — is plus-4, which is much better than Mr Albanese’s minus-8.

J.L. Partners director Dr Tom Lubbock said Mr Albanese was “just” leading as preferred PM “but when we asked voters to give one word to describe him the results are pretty brutal”.

“He is seen by voters as ‘weak’, and by a smaller minority as ‘useless’ and ‘liar’.”

On the plus side he is also seen as more “caring”, “charismatic” and better at “understanding normal people” than Mr Dutton.

Dr Lubbock said even more concerning for Labor was that while both leaders are a drag on their party’s vote, Mr Albanese was far more so and “more voters think (he) is untrustworthy, insincere, unprincipled and sleazy.”

He said voters were also marking down the PM on how he was handling cost of living issues.

“Voters don’t see Labor as doing anywhere near well enough on it, describing their performance so far mostly as ‘poor’, but also as ‘bad’ and ‘terrible’,” he said.

“A number of respondents were far more coarse, using the words ‘crap’, ‘shit’ and ‘f--ked’.”
